For "artistic" photography, there are no best settings. Play around with the settings until you get the effect you want.

For "general" photography, Ghh0st has the right idea - leave it in P mode. Once you get used to what's going on, you can switch to different modes (eg, shutter priority, manual) to get the depth of field, blur, &c that you want.
