Yeah, I'd at least go with something that can read the freeze frame data from the code event.

e.g.
Amazon.com: Actron CP9175 AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner with Freeze Frame Data for OBDII Vehicles: Automotive

I went with this one because it had a few more features I wanted like live data display and capture ($120 at Sears). Probably overkill for your purposes, but the above seems worth it.
