I love my Mazda 3. I picked it up over the summer as a cheap daily driver. It's fun to drive if you ignore the fact it's slow. Really, really slow. But it gets 40mpg on 87 octane, you can get cheap tires since the wheels are tiny and it handles surprisingly well for an econobox.
The up side of a car this slow is that you're not tempted to mod the power train. There's no point.
