Unless you drive real hard, track the car, or run in some other extreme condition, most good-quality oils are good for at least 5000 miles - even more if you drive "normally."
That said... I only do a little spirited driving every now and then (seldom WOT) but I change the oil every 3-4k. Old habits die hard.

If you are really serious about your oil, analysis is your best friend.
