Personally, I wouldn't drive around with the damage, but it might be an option
Also, you're probably right that your personal mechanic or a competent body shop could do the repair without replacing the fender completely.

I stopped by the dealership to ask. She looked at me like I was an idiot and said I was sol. Insurance put it at $1,100 of damage naturally so it shows on the report. They want a whole new fender replaced and repaint of the surrounding area. Screw them. Hopefully my guy can find a salvage junk fender or PDR the ever living crap out of it with some paint thrown in. Insurance is freaking useless in the state of NY. $500 deductible my ***.
