Actually, you should check and see if you have any damage coverage on return. Our Acura lease had like $1500 with no more than $500 per incident. And everything they listed was priced with a super low estimate. Somebody had shot the fender with a nail gun or something and it was all rusted with a 1/2" hole by the time we returned the car. Well the estimate line item for that item was $126 or something stupid
Personally, I wouldn't drive around with the damage, but it might be an option
Also, you're probably right that your personal mechanic or a competent body shop could do the repair without replacing the fender completely.
