As mentioned, modern engines don't follow this same need quite like older vehicles. But the idea is that the break in period will be the period during which the most contaminants (mostly metal) are deposited into the oil because the engine parts are still wearing in. Ideally, you change the oil immediately after the break-in period to remove all these metal contaminants.
Lots of people like to do 3500 mile oil changes, so if you do the first change before 1500 miles, the next change should be around 5000 miles. I typically go with a 5K mile interval or shorter depending on how hard I drove the car during that period. My manual says 7500 miles for a normal interval.
