"Direct Injection" refers to the part spraying fuel during combustion process. In vehicles with DI, injectors are long nozzles spraying fuel right into the chamber. Benefits are less fuel is wasted and more control on fuel, but long term effects are slow build up of carbon around the valves and injectors.
The benefits seem to outweigh the cons, so companies are moving to DI technology.
