I'd recommend against "learning" even in a parking lot. Look around for local car control clinics or basic drifting events. There will be other like minded individuals there who have made all the mistakes for you already and can teach you the right way to learn how to control your car. Most people start with controlled donuts. You'll learn exponentially faster with someone who knows what they're doing in the passenger seat.

Imagine if you put all the money you're about to throw into repairing your car toward learning how to drift with experienced hooners instead. You'd be a pro.
