Very likely it is the slave or master cylinder that has failed. A puddle of clutch fluid on the ground indicates a slave failure, although the leak can be entirely contained within the transmission bell housing. The master usually has internal seals that fail, so no leak will be present. Either one will introduce contaminants into the system, and you generally will find the fluid in the reservoir to be very dark/dirty (assuming it hasn't leaked out).
