Wow, this thread has become a monster! Just got caught up and I have to say that if the topic has been debated this much on an enthusiast forum, then it stands to reason that your average consumer will in fact cross shop these two cars. The inevitable questions we have to ask ourselves is: 1. Will the fact the Genesis is a Hyundai (the heretofore well documented stigma that goes along with the marque) be overcome by the price disparity that a similarily specced Z has? 2. Does the average consumer even care the Genesis is a Hyundai?
Someone earlier quoted the article published in CAR about the Genesis being driven in South Korea. They failed to quote the portion of the article deriding the Genesis' horrible ride quality "...Yet the amble does highlight a flaw: the Genesis rides badly, its damping lacking the supple polish of the best sporting all-rounders. Perhaps a trip to Lotus would be in order. While they're at it, a proper limited-slip diff would be good too. Our car's locking diff is too lazy and imprecise to get power down cleanly when you're really pushing." Interestingly enough though, they end with a positive outlook saying "Today, with the Genesis Coupe, the company has built a truly world-class product. Let's just hope they have the sense to bring it to Britain." (p.86 Jan '09)
This seemingly at-odds conclusion is why I subscribe to EVO.
