Most definitely, and I think it will be quite a long time where I would feel comfortable riding something like this. It is exciting to think that all of the technologies that would support this type of vehicle to make it safe and practical are maturing rather quickly:

Augmented Reality - Think Google Glass where a computer will create virtual sky lanes so we have an orderly and safe method of navigating

Self-driving vehicles - Collision prevention, emergency takeover and traffic regulation

Advanced materials and technology - Hybrid engines, lightweight materials and explosive emergency parachute deployment

Redundant thrust mechanisms - They indicate that the eventual final design will have 5 rotors

I am like you disappointed that Back to the Future's predictions haven't come true, but also pleased that 1984's vision hasn't been realized either.
