I prefer the look and the ride. Also, the wider tires take a lot more abuse without decintegrating, I had base 245s on at one point and those wore out withing a couple months. Wider tires last a lot longer when you don't baby them.
Besides, contact patch doesn't increase with a wider tire, it just changes shape...and even if it did slightly, surface area does not add traction because the car's weight gets distribited throughout that surface area, so you have less weight per square, so it amounts to pretty much the same thing. Wide tires are for taking heat and having a lot of rubber to burn, the type of tire compound is what gives you different levels of traction (in the dry)...on different surfaces.
