This link has some good pics. The first couple of steps show how you can easily check/change the pads without having to remove the Akebono caliper.

As for telling whether they are worn or not, that's easy. You want to replace them before the pad materials wear completely away, exposing the metal backing plate. You know, before the brakes start screeching metal on metal.
