When not on an official schedule of some sort, I tend to work in manic, creative bursts... followed by wondering how I got anything of magnitude and/or substance completed once the phase passes... rinse, repeat.
I'm also a big proponent of incubation; your brain can be ticking away at something behind the scenes while recreating, then: epiphany.
Thus, avoiding work can also involve accomplishing work.
