They are actually sprung quite stiffly but the 4-way dampers are set quite soft for hi-speed bumps so they will ride the kerbs without bouncing. Lo-speed bump is set relatively stiff to control the car's pitch under brakes and over normal road ripples.

Most cars have only 70-80mm of bump travel and 25-40 of droop at the hub, so not a huge amount of travel
