With the Lotus comment I meant to refer to its history. The NA design team loved British roadsters but wanted something, um, reliable. The team borrowed a few lines from a Lotus Elan, and given the sad shape of Lotus no one could really say boo about it at the time
Not losing its heritage with a dash if italian is how I see the new one. I do look forward to driving one, though the Z-R may get a bit jealous. The Z has sentimental value to me, but I would be hard pressed to walk away from a nicely optioned manually operated soft top miata for mid to upper 20's new that
was as fun as I think it will be to drive.
Time will tell.
