Nice DIY, OP. I think that most people who break it during removal just get impatient or don't use the fishing line method. That tape is strong stuff.
Yea, I picked up an evo-r high wing with CF top for $300 off ebay and it installed into the same holes. There are a lot of holes from the clips so plugging it would not look good unless you're going to get it smoothed and painted.

The tape is tough stuff and you definitely need to cut it with fishing line then a blade of some type. I can see where people see it starting to separate and think they can just muscle it off, but the tension will build and break it once you get toward the middle.
