Default Custom Shift Knob Idea

So I've been doing little tiny mods to my car here and there. I have been having this idea to do a custom shift knob out of some nice wood. A friend of mine has an uncle who does really good wood work which some samples can be found here facebook.com/nolamonkey

I was wondering from some of the hands on guys around here what are some things to look out for when going this route? Any suggestions? Also, I was thinking of getting him to carve groves for how I place my hands on the stock shifter.

Any and all help would be appreciated.
