not downshifting to 2nd at 40 mph but not by a significant amount. And no it doesn't damage the engine
Avoid downshifting into 1st.
Throttle is what uses gas. Lots of throttle at high RPMs will be the least efficient use of gas. But it is the most efficient method to obtain smiles
