My guess is a bushing or joint or whatever on the shift linkage doesn't have enough grease and I'm getting metal to metal contact. Car's under warranty so I was planning on taking it in, but if it was an easy fix (smearing grease on something) I figure'd I'd just do it myself. Has anyone heard of this before?
It's quite possible that lack of lube is the problem and it's fairly easy to get to the parts inside the cabin. If the problem is outside, you'll need a lift or ramps. I'd try some heavy grease (lithium?). It will probably be a big help to look at the FSM (link in my sig) - procedures to R&R console and lots of pretty drawings of the shifter mechanism.

Edit: If it a piece of plastic that is making the noise, I'd use Teflon or graphite spray.
