The tires have 8,900 miles on them with plenty of tread . I won't be driving it in the snow, but I would like to drive year round w/out buying another set of wheels.

The compounds used in the RE050A and the other Bridgestone sport tires start to drop off as the temperature drops. Yes, there is a little drop in traction as the temperature drops below 60 and starts getting really bad when you get below 45. A good all-season tire will hold up better in the winter temperatures, although if it regularly gets below freezing there you could use performance snow tires even if you don't drive in snow. The snows wear faster but in NC you would probably only have them on the car for 4 months total.
