Overlooking the silliness factor of anyone thinking even a small group would only need one physician following a zombie apocalypse, the writing was better on this one.
On a related note, their socialization process made little to no sense... you don't have to guilt or coerce people into doing chores or giving "favors" in return for food when resources are scarce and its basically martial law (who are they "keeping up appearances" of civility for?)... accordingly, why not just let people leave if they won't play ball? That whole set-up was a little goofy...
Anyway, I suspect they are splitting up the groups to see if they can successfully develop that spin off show with totally original characters they've been threatening to make.
I mean, not that they kind of already haven't, but, you know, without having to even feign more than a marginal connection to the source material.
