Learn the friction point. Practice getting the car rolling without touching the gas, and without getting any surging. If you can perfect that, you're good to go.
Learn to drive with your ears, not your eyes - don't even look at the tach. For obvious reasons, turn the radio off so you can hear the motor better.
Once you can go for a solid stretch without stalling in a parking lot, move onto public back roads with as many stop signs as possible. Come to a FULL 100% STOP for EVERY single stop sign. Drive around this area for at least an hour. For every time you stall, add another 5 minutes.
And finally, the more you think about it, the worse you'll be. It needs to become muscle memory. If you are playing the, "I'll just stare at my tach and keep my RPMs above a certain point..." game, you're wrong.
