Jwick - The rattle is when the car is in first and driving right until the shift change at about 6500 to redline. Just put it in 4th and let go of the clutch all the way? I'll do that when I leave in a few.
Yes - side step the clutch or let it out as fast as possible. If it grabs and kills the engine, the clutch is strong.

To be honest not many people have issues with the clutch itself. The CSC is crap, many members have replaced multiples. Mine went out at 1,200miles. The CMC appears to be a one use item and needs to be replaced if all the fluid is drained out of it. I would watch the clutch fluid and change it if it is dirty. Dirty fluid seems to speed up the CSC failure. Also switch to a synthetic fluid.

To further jaytirbhaw's point. These cars are noisy. The tranny makes a bunch of noise and the engine does too. You'll just have to learn what is normal and what's a problem. The car is pretty good at throwing a code if there is a serious issue.
