I think I've seen that discussed on here before but I can't remember where.

IIRC, it all depends on the HU - some don't need a filler plate, some do.

Edit: If you just want better sound and aren't worried about more power or features, try changing the speakers. If that turns out to be not good enough, then look into a different HU.
