Well, I'd say that if something in your engine is starting to fail and ferrous metal shavings are getting into the oil, then something bad is going to happen fairly soon and you're already in an expensive repair situation. So if when you change your oil you take the time to remove the magnet, remove the oil filter, pour the oil out of the filter and look at it, any unusual amount of metal shavings will at least alert you to a problem brewing (maybe before a bad problem turns into a catastrophic one). Although, of course, with non-ferrous metal like aluminum a magnet won't help at all.
So a FilterMag and/or oil pan drain plug magnet might or might not help you, but it sure can't hurt.
