Yeah, that's why some companies like to take pictures of packages before UPS/FedEx/DHL/whoever picks them up. That way when someone files a claim and they shipping company tries to deny it, they slap them in the face with the photo. I love it when it happens.
It's possible that the driver himself received it that way. I used to work for FedEx Home delivery as a driver. I had a box thrown on my pallet one time that was supposed to be a piece of lawn furniture. It looked like someone had used it as batting practice. When I told the facility manager about it, he just shrugged and told me to try to deliver it anyway. The customer refused delivery because of the condition, and so it went back to the sorting facility to sit on a pallet in the corner for awhile (forever most likely, it's probably still sitting there).
Also, it doesn't hurt to request Signature Required shipping. It does sometimes cost a little extra, but it gives you the chance to inspect the package first, and if you don't like it, refuse delivery.
