All gas is NOT the same. Don't ever believe otherwise. Some gasolines perform far better than others, even on cars without high compression engines. This I know from experience, from trial and error, from suffering many underachieving automobiles. I had all kinds of trouble with Mitsubishi's high compression Eclipses throughout the 90s and early 2000s.
I've run crap gas in the Z as well and endured inconsistent performance until I discovered Sunoco gas. Now I only put premium Sunoco in my Z and the car runs like a champ, unless its just too hot and too humid.
So, I thought my daily driver 4-cyl Camry LE, not being a performance car, would perform the same regardless of which brand of gasoline I fed it, but I was wrong. I used BP for several months and the engine was not very responsive and performance was... well, the car was just plain slow. Laboriously slow. I figured maybe this was just the way 4-cyl Camrys ran until I happened to use a different brand of gasoline (Hess, I think it was). Suddenly, the engine ran smoother and the car was noticeably quicker. Now I feed my Camy nothing but Sunoco and all is well.
No one will ever convince me that all gas is the same.
