My guess is the shot helps to break traction verrrry easily in order to initiate a drift. it's overkill, but its all basically stunt driving, so...

A blower (especially roots or twin screw) would definitely be the way to go for a road course car, tho'. To ram a car sideways, the shot actuator probably acts like a "slide" button.
