The button on the handle works on my Altima while the engine is running so I'd imagine that it's similar for other recent Nissan/Infiniti cars.

The car will whine loudly (beeping, NO KEY LCD warning) if it loses contact with the key - it's hard to miss. I'd think it'd be a
worse idea if the car shut itself off after losing communication with the keyfob for a while. My current car has shut itself off without warning in traffic at random. Not fun.
The solution here is to turn off your car when it's unattended. You wouldn't leave the keys in the ignition of a locked, non-Intellikey car, would you? All someone would have to do is smash the window and go.

I was quoted ~$200 for a new fob, mechanical key and programming at a dealership. It costs a lot more if you've forgotten/lost the security code number/tag that comes with your spare set of keys and all of your other keys.
