We all agree that English started in England right?...The original English pronunciation it Zed as it's derived from the Greek letter Zeta and French Zede. The pronunciation change happened when you Americans had your big falling out with England back in the day. You simply preferred to sound different and hung onto the spelling and pronunciation differences in the language to become American English.
Good on you for being different and not conforming like the rest of us English speaking countries did.
