I say just let people do what they want instead of making big scenes. I always keep my papers in the glove box for sure. But it doesn't bother me if someone wants to put their own under their trunk mat. If theres negative consequences from someone elses preference then that should be his problem. There is no law that states you must have your papers in a certain place inside your car as far as I'm aware of. But it would make sense to have your papers handy without having to get out of your seat. I had a car when I was 16 years old where the drivers side window doesn't roll down and was pulled over, I told him my window doesn't roll down and I started opening my door asking him if this is ok, he had his hand at his holster yelling at the top of his lungs. So I left the door closed and said My Bad lol. Just a heads up.
