I agree, brand loyalty is only viable if you're on the winning team
Toyota has huge brand loyalty because they have super reliable vehicles. Word of mouth from a friend or relative is enough to get most people to buy a certain brand, and Toyota has had good products since the 80's. But if Toyota took a huge nose dive, it would be ignorant for people to keep buying them simply based on name.
