If it turned out to be something simple like a sensor you could have easily had someone in your local forum replace one for beer money. Being impatient gets expensive. Don't take this one too hard- what's done is done, but in the future it might be cheaper to rent a car for a day or two and fix it outside of the dealership if it's not going to be covered under your warranty than to drop it at the dealer with no clue what to tell them to look for.
Also, what was the oil level of the car when you checked it?
