The thing with the 80's was that people who worked for Mercedes would get one car a year at cost or an extreme discount. Now imagine Ze German buying that same $52k Merc for $25k, and hungry American cash in hand comes over offering $30k, he sells it and then imports it for personal use. And now than $52k Merc is $35k. (People still do similar with buying Breitlings and other high end watches)
Also, this is ********, it IS about "safety" granted, it may have been lobbied by Mercedes. Anyone who KNOWS about cars, especially Mercs knows that the SL had 2 bumpers. The Euro bumper and the HIDEOUS extended bumper (I THINK we can thank Nader for the safety BS.) So, in order for your car to be legal in the US it needed to meet the new US safety laws. And as time went on, cars evolved, doors got bars put on them, and enter Nissan. The skyline never went through the tests any other car did...

Yep, we used call the USA and Porsche american spec bumpers , cancer bumpers, they looked hidious.
Used cars are much cheaper in Europe than here, get a 2 year Hyundai loaded for approx 2000 quid. I bought my used e36 M3 back in 2001 for 7 grand it has 70K miles on it. Over here the used car market is in lockdown by the dealers. Hence the inflated prices.
