Brake check is absolutely no-no

The best method is to downshift a gear or two (or whatever is appropriate for your gear and speed). If they've been annoying you already, first step is to speed up slightly (give yourself room in front first if you need to) to create just a little space between you and them. They will then speed up as well, likely much more than is necessary. When they are approaching closer, downshift and watch their car in your rear view mirror. As soon as you see their car's nose dip cause they're braking, give it some good throttle and pull away sharply. I've never had to do this more that a couple of times to get tailgating vehicles to back off.
