It was explained to the by a guy at discount tire that on a 255/35 that the 255 is the width (I think we all no that) but what i didn't realize is that the 35 (second number) is the side wall height that is roughly 35% of the width. So when you go to a larger tire the second number gets smaller. It doesn't necessarily mean the front tire on let's say a 265/35 has a taller sidewall than a 305/30 (while ther is some difference it's not much). I found this website (1010tire.com) as a useful tool for me since I'm looking to keep the same diameter as the stock tires but go to a 20" rim and wider tires.
