In winter, you need the full coverage to warm up as much as possible. Come spring/summer, unless you are doing spirited driving, you can ALSO do full coverage. However, if you intend to push it a little bit, you could certainly do about 50% coverage and it will keep you nice and cool. But (depending on the size of your cooler - I'm assuming it's a 25R or larger) for the most part, you can get away with covering most of it at all times.

The oil overheating issues are almost exclusively located on the track, and at times when you plan to rev north of 4-5K for an extended period of time...
