So this boils down to the couple will get insurance money from someone in the end, but it will be the value of a 2012 vehicle, not replacement cost. They owned the vehicle since day 1 and anyone else's discarded baby will never be as good as theirs. They probably are holding out to get a brand new one by shaming the dealership.
If this is on a public highway and some kid speeding totals their car, the kids insurance is not going to give replacement value. It is just how most insurance works. I know if it was my car, I'd want a new replacement too, but I also see the other side of it.
