I remember a car review of a vintage porsche, and the reviewer showed himself being out-dragged by a modern minivan. Then he went on to explain that it didn't matter one bit - the porsche was a total blast to drive, whereas the minivan was an appliance.
I heard essentially the same thing from a miata racer at the track. He came from a C6 Z06. He said he just couldn't ring the corvette out on the road without doing triple digit speeds, whereas the miata was a blast at lower speeds, so he could hoon about all day long without anybody calling the cops. Plus, hoosiers are cheap in that tiny size, and so is everything else on that car, so he got out to the track a lot more.
On the old porsche, why not try it? Since most of the cost is in maintenance, If you don't get a terrible deal, if you hate the car, you can just sell it again for about what you paid.
