I actually pulled mine out. They are held to the top by the double sided tape on one side. Yes they are a rub guard for the last joint on either side, but they actually were causing the top to get caught on the cylinder when it was closing. Texas heat weakened the glue.

Once I pulled mine out I removed any residual glue from the top. If you watch the top close, right as the last section comes down by your head, you can see the small hydraulic cylinder they cover. If you pull the material out a little you will see that there is nothing to rub against.

I've had no issues with nine since.
