It's a Catch-22. Those employees wouldn't be necessary if the average American consumer wasn't so greedy and obsessed with the whole Christmas shopping machine. And the retailers enable it. All it takes is one retailer to open it's doors on the Holiday and the others have to follow down the slippery slope in order to compete and survive.
Sure, some people might take a Holiday Hours job at a place like Target because they need the extra money, but I can assure you that the majority of the employees there would rather be with their families today.
The stores might open at 6PM today, but the employees are already there stocking shelves and hanging sales tags.
