Whether you believe the bystanders "innocent" or not, the fact that they did nothing to prevent the premeditated attack makes them no less responisble for the crime.

By that rationale, anyone nearby who saw the whole thing -- and stayed out of it -- would be equally deserving of death.

So we're back to trying to look on the "bright side" of it...
