From what I can tell, having the two exhausts linked in some sort of manner would probably help maintain equal exhaust pressure, and such, improve scavenging effects. This is due to the change in pressure changing the speed of sound in that particular exhaust tube, and thereby changing how quickly the pressure wave propagates from the exhaust valve to the collector.

This is my practical and theoretical knowledge speaking, and it may not apply to FI cars. Haha.

As for benefits to run a true dual system? I dunno. Weight savings by cutting off a tiny pipe?
