It's my assumption and feeling that the washing machine is just an analogy and he did not in fact meet a "wash-head" or encounter these 4 washing machines, etc. I think the author would have been better served *actually* looking up someone else into something as much as car enthusiasts are into cars rather than making it up.
I know this is a humor piece, but it could have been humorous without describing car mechanics with the backdrop of a washing machine, and instead replace it with something that at least holds up beyond being used as a silly analogy.
Go to a Linux Users Group and try to appreciate their use of *nix over Windows.
Talk to an audiophile about a proper home stereo setup.
Talk to a crossfit/personal trainer about how to eat better day to day.
Find an IT security nut and ask them how to stay safe and secure on the Internet.
Most of these topics when talking to real enthusiasts will quickly turn into an avalanche of information that non-enthusiasts cannot process; they'll go glassy-eyed, start nodding, and take the first chance they can get to say, "Thanks," and move on. They may blog, tweet, or just talk about you later to their partner/friends about the nut they talked to earlier who is way too into xyz...
