Are modern wheels that much different than back in The Good Ole Days? I had the lug nuts come loose on an old ('60s) Mustang (I snugged up the lug nuts before letting the car down and forget to torque them on one wheel) and the whole car vibrated after they backed off only 1/4" (maybe less). There was no doubt that something was very wrong long before it got to the point where the wheel would have fallen off.
