Meh... I like it loud loud loud.... I've got a single 12 now, down from 2 12s, running about 800ish watts to it now. Not a low-sensitivity sub, either... but it isn't near enough for me. I'm likely going to be running around 3k to subs alone, so I will be forking out for an upgraded alternator. Something at least 270 amps, I think I've seen a couple 320-amp versions. About $750 or so, but well worth it to me. I've got 3 alts and 5kW right now in my Tahoe, so I'm definitely looking for a lot of sound.
I do notice the voltage drop in my system right now, but not nearly as much when I'm driving. At idle it'll pull down into the 11s. Currently about... 1500W or so (rated).
