Moving terabytes
I finally discovered what caused my iMac to randomly freeze. And it was Norton

Apparently, the idle-scan feature sucked up the last bit of available resources if another resource intensive process was active such as Time Machine

. I decided to disable idle-scanning because backups are much more important to me.
