The aperture on the lens is so small that the sensor on the camera needs more time to "collect" light in order to get a clear image of the subject. So if you are not a source of light and are moving, you are invisible!
Of course, there are a lot of factors affecting the result, but you get the idea.

Yep...this technique is used alot in the studios in Detroit , and with the company i used to work for. Sometimes if you dont' have the motion light as we called it, we would use Lightroom and Photoshop to create this effect using the outline.
